Level 3 Process

Southern Waste Solutions (SWS) plays a unique and crucial role in waste management, operating Tasmania’s only regulated waste facility, known as the C Cell.

SWS accepts Level 3 and above regulated waste from the transport, aquaculture, mining and manufacturing sectors as well as from the public through licenced commercial contractors.

Level 3 and above regulated waste must be classified and approved for disposal by the Tasmanian EPA following their Information Bulletin No. 105 Guidelines. SWS will assist all customers in gaining these approvals by the EPA. This ensures that the application, assessment, transport and disposal restrictions and guidelines are managed and adhered to. SWS prides itself on assisting customers with this process, ensuring it is completed accurately, efficiently and in accordance with EPA guidelines.

SWS engages the services of expert contaminated lands consultants to provide disposal reports and prepare applications for the EPA. This fee is built into the existing gate rate for disposal.
The Copping C Cell facility has been designed and constructed to meet the highest global standards for landfill cell engineering and undergoes regular independent monitoring and testing on the integrity of the lining system.

The C Cell utilises a multi-layer construction process of natural clays and manufactured geosynthetic materials that are designed to prevent the loss of any material within the C Cell.  This multi-layered construction includes leak detection systems that are continually monitoring for any loss of containment within the layers. This significantly reduces the environmental risk of any movement of contaminated material out of the C Cell containment area. SWS utilises a 3D GPS tracking system to map the location of all waste inside the cell.

All material that enters the C Cell is tested, recorded and mapped to precisely document its location, disposal date, levels of contamination and any risks of interaction with other wastes.
