SWS does accept batteries and e-waste, however does not currently undertake extensive recycling of e-waste. The recovery and recycling of e-waste will be increased once the Lutana WTS redevelopment is completed.
How does SWS prevent negative environmental impacts from its landfill operations?
The Copping Landfills are subject to strict environmental regulation through Environmental Protection Notices issued by the Tasmanian EPA. There are many clauses implemented to ensure the site operates in an environmentally responsible manner, including water monitoring, litter control, design and construction of new cells, and the rehabilitation of completed cells.
What is SWS doing to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill?
SWS undertakes a range of resource recovery activities at its sites, including recovery of metals, tyres, reusable items, and also has a landfill gas extraction facility at the Copping landfill to create electricity and destroy methane. SWS has also partnered with Landcare to provide tours of the Copping landfill for school students in the Greater Hobart area. Once the redevelopment of the Lutana site is complete, the scope of resource recovery activities will be able to be vastly improved, increasing the amount of material diverted from landfill.
