What types of waste does SWS handle?

What types of waste cannot be accepted at Lutana/Copping?

While not an exhaustive list, SWS does not accept the following types of waste:

  1. Liquids (of any composition)
  2. Herbicides
  3. Liquid paints and solvents
  4. Acids and alkalis
  5. Organic and inorganic chemicals (and pharmaceuticals)
  6. Pesticides
  7. Oil
  8. Industrial sludges
  9. Cytotoxic and radioactive clinical waste and materials
  10. Poisons
  11. Flammables (including flares)
  12. Obsolete locator beacons (overhead aircraft detect these and alert Search & Rescue)

How do I apply for disposal of Controlled waste (Level 2)?

You must have an account to apply for disposal at the Copping landfill. If you are not an existing customer or an existing customer is not applying for disposal on your behalf, please contact our office via email info@swstas.com.au or by phone on 6273 9712. How do I apply for disposal of regulated waste (level 3 and above)?

You must have an account to apply for disposal at the Copping landfill. If you are not an existing customer please contact our office via email info@swstas.com.au or by phone on 6273 9712. To submit an application for regulated waste, please refer to the C Cell application one pager

How should asbestos be packed for proper disposal?

Asbestos must be double-bagged using 200 microns (thick) heavy-duty polyethylene sheeting/bags, goose-necked to seal the bags and labelled. The 200 micron sheeting/plastic bags a are available at most hardware stores.

Can I get my vehicle weighed at your facility? What are the costs involved?

Yes. The weighbridge at Lutana Waste Transfer Station is a Registered Public Weighbridge.

Our public weighbridge service is open to the general public between 8am and 3pm Monday to Friday.

Cost:

Gross OR Tare docket $16.50 incl GST per docket.

Gross AND Tare docket $22 incl GST per docket.

Both the Copping Waste Precinct and Lutana Waste Transfer Station may be closed during unsafe weather events, including high winds. Customers will be notified as early as possible of any unscheduled closures.

How does SWS prevent negative environmental impacts from its landfill operations?

The Copping Landfills are subject to strict environmental regulation through Environmental Protection Notices issued by the Tasmanian EPA. There are many clauses implemented to ensure the site operates in an environmentally responsible manner, including water monitoring, litter control, design and construction of new cells, and the rehabilitation of completed cells.

What is SWS doing to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill?

SWS undertakes a range of resource recovery activities at its sites, including recovery of metals, tyres, reusable items, and also has a landfill gas extraction facility at the Copping landfill to create electricity and destroy methane.  SWS has also partnered with Landcare to provide tours of the Copping landfill for school students in the Greater Hobart area.  Once the redevelopment of the Lutana site is complete, the scope of resource recovery activities will be able to be vastly improved, increasing the amount of material diverted from landfill.

Does SWS accept batteries and e-waste?

SWS does accept batteries and e-waste, however does not currently undertake extensive recycling of e-waste.  The recovery and recycling of e-waste will be increased once the Lutana WTS redevelopment is completed.
